25 Great Foliage Views in Finger Lakes Wine Country, #7 Finding Your Favorite By Using The I Love NY Foliage Tracker

With September waning, it’s time to get serious about fall in Finger Lakes Wine Country. Driving to Corning this morning from Elmira on Interstate 86 I noticed the bright reds, yellows, and oranges beginning to really pop on the hills surrounding the bustling highway. I would say that the fall foliage is just starting here in the southern end of Finger Lakes Wine Country. There is still quite a bit of green out there, but that’s not going to be true for long.

The I Love New York website offers users the Official New York State Foliage Tracker. The Foliage Tracker has map of New York State complete with color coding of the stages of the changing of the leaves. Each county across New York State has official “Leaf Peepers.” What are these so-called Leaf Peepers? According to the I Love New York website,

“These fall foliage spotters are instructed on how to rate foliage color in their areas, citing conditions such as brilliance, percentage of leaves changed, predominating colors and stages (just beginning, near peak, peak and past peak). I LOVE NEW YORK compiles its weekly reports based upon information called in by the spotters.”

So, these Peepers are out there giving you the inside scoop on Fall Foliage all over the state, including Finger Lakes Wine Country. From the official Foliage Report today: “Look for bright orange and red highlights. In Chemung County 15-20 percent of the leaves are expected to be changed by weekend. Most leaves here are of average brilliance, although small clusters of bright fall-colored trees, approaching mid-point, can be found along some roads. Predominating colors are orange, yellow, red and purple appearing.”
